I Want To Sell It…!

As someone who has created something that you feel immensely proud of and are wanting to take to market and scale up, you might think the best thing ever is to sell your creation. 

I get where you are coming from, you might think: I am too old for this malarkey. Or what ever else it is that is stopping you in your tracks. First of all: age is nothing but a number. Second of all: selling might actually not in fact be your best course of action. 

Say you were the one who invented a cure for something massively important. This cure would potentially turn the health of our planet up to a far better standard than ever before. Would you really want to sell that? Or would you rather give licence to someone to produce this for you, while you are still retaining control of the vital ingredients that go into the end product? 

Selling can indeed seem like the be all and end all for you, however if you are truly wanting to create a legacy and you are wanting for your product / creation / brainchild or whatever you want to call it, to make a difference in the world it may actually be to your advantage to have a say in how it’s put together so that you can retain your sense of pride and achievement, not to mention still receive a financial reward for all your hard work. 

In the case of a sale, you loose control of the creation, plus you might actually not obtain the price you feel is the right one for all your grafting. Let me ask you: Do you think, for instance, that that the people who created the various vaccines or other medical inventions, decided to just come up with the idea and then sell it? I think in many cases you will find that they have actually held on to the creation and thus are making a good living for themselves and their families. That’s what empire builders do.

Creating a super viable thing takes time, effort and courage. You have to be patient and build up the surrounding goodwill. Then naturally the safeguarding of it is to register a trademark that you can protect your creation with.
